Every lipoedema is different – and so is every treatment
Lipoedema can affect different parts of the body and presents differently in every patient. That is why at Lipo Doctors we treat all affected areas individually.
We deliberately avoid rigid standard packages so that every therapy is matched as closely as possible to your personal findings. Not every region has to be treated at the same time – a step-by-step approach is gentler on the body and leads to lasting, attractive results.

These parts of the body are typically affected by lipoedema and can be treated as part of a medically indicated treatment.

Legs & knees
From the hips down to the ankles – for lighter, pain-free legs and better mobility in everyday life.
Upper & lower arms
Arms
Heaviness, a feeling of coldness and pain on touch – targeted removal brings noticeably better function and a lighter feeling.
Harmonious transitions
Hips, buttocks & transitions
Abrupt changes in contour and ‘cuffing’ often cause functional problems, for example when sitting. Our focus: form and function alike.
Since October 2025
Covered by German statutory health insurance – at all stages
In July 2025, the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) decided that since October 2025, German statutory health insurers cover the costs of liposuction for lipoedema – regardless of the stage – for patients insured in Germany. The complicated application process no longer applies.

The complicated application process no longer applies. The treating doctors check your eligibility directly – we take care of this for you.
All stages
Until October 2025, only at stage III. Since then, patients at stages I and II are included too.
Limbs only
Statutory cover includes the arms and legs. The abdomen, flanks and back remain self-pay.
In line with G-BA rules
We carry out operations covered by statutory insurance at the NATIONALKLINIK Wertheim, a hospital included in the state hospital plan – using the tumescent technique, as required by the G-BA.
What you need for statutory cover – we take care of it
6 months of conservative therapy, a BMI of no more than 35, the two-doctor principle (diagnosis and the decision to operate made by different doctors) – sounds complicated? It doesn’t have to be. At Lipo Doctors, we coordinate every step: from diagnosis and conservative therapy to surgery and aftercare. You don’t have to worry about a thing.
Optional additions
Additional aesthetic treatments
Areas such as the abdomen, flanks or back are not part of the medical treatment of lipoedema – but they can be treated in addition.
Abdomen & flanks
Where there is a marked disproportion to the trunk – for a more harmonious overall appearance.
Back & neck
Targeted treatment of bothersome fat pads in the bra area or on the upper back.
Other areas
The intimate area or other regions – where there are functional or aesthetic limitations.
Medical vs aesthetic – what you should know:
The typical lipoedema areas are exclusively the limbs (arms and legs). Under German rules, medically indicated procedures with a confirmed diagnosis count as medical treatment and are therefore exempt from VAT. Purely aesthetic procedures – for example on the abdomen, back or flanks – are subject to VAT. If a combination makes sense, we will discuss it with you openly.

FAQ on treatment areas
Which areas can be treated in one session?
That depends on the extent of your lipoedema and your individual situation. As a rule, we treat one connected area per session – for example both thighs or both upper arms. This gives your body the best chance to recover and allows us to achieve more precise results.
Do all areas have to be treated?
No – treatment is based solely on your personal findings and symptoms. Not every region needs to be treated. Together we decide which areas matter most for you and in which order to proceed.
What is the difference between medical and aesthetic treatment?
The typical lipoedema areas (arms and legs) can be treated as a medical treatment once the diagnosis has been confirmed – under German rules, this is exempt from VAT. Other areas such as the abdomen, flanks or back count as aesthetic procedures and are subject to VAT. We explain this openly during your consultation.
Can I have just one area treated?
Yes, of course. Many patients start with the most severely affected area – often the legs. Further areas can be treated later. Your treatment plan is tailored to your wishes and your findings.
Does health insurance cover the costs for all areas?
Since October 2025, German statutory health insurance (GKV) has covered the costs for the typical lipoedema areas (arms and legs) for patients insured in Germany – at all stages and without a complicated application process. The requirements are: a BMI of no more than 35, 6 months of conservative therapy and the two-doctor principle (diagnosis and the decision to operate made by different doctors). With a BMI between 32 and 35, the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) must also be appropriate for your age. Additional aesthetic treatments on the abdomen, back or flanks are not covered by statutory insurance. We carry out operations covered by statutory insurance at our NATIONALKLINIK Wertheim – preparation and aftercare remain at the location near you. At Lipo Doctors, we coordinate every step for you.
