Compression
Medical compression garments are mandatory for 4–8 weeks after surgery. They reduce swelling, support healing and make a decisive contribution to maintaining the result.

Manual lymphatic drainage helps remove tissue fluid and speeds up healing. In the first few weeks we recommend 2–3 sessions a week.

When excess skin remains
After liposuction, excess skin may remain – especially after a larger loss of volume. With the RESHAPE programme we offer the full range of skin-tightening procedures for lipoedema patients.
Whether skin tightening makes sense for you, and which kind, depends on several factors: the degree of skin laxity, the individual quality of your skin and your personal wishes.
Important: skin-tightening operations should only be carried out once lipoedema treatment is complete and the tissue has settled – usually no earlier than 6–12 months after the last liposuction.

Here you will find answers to the most important questions about the time after your lipoedema surgery.
How long do I need to wear compression after surgery?
For the first 4–8 weeks you should wear your compression garments day and night. After that, it is reduced to daytime only. In the long term, compression remains an important part of lipoedema therapy – even after successful surgery. We advise you on made-to-measure compression stockings or garments.
When will I see the final result?
The first visible improvements appear after 4–6 weeks, as the swelling goes down. The final result is visible after about 3–6 months. For some patients it can take up to 12 months for all the swelling to subside completely.
When does skin tightening make sense?
Whether skin tightening makes sense depends on the amount of excess skin, the quality of your skin and your personal wishes. We recommend waiting at least 6–12 months after your last liposuction for the tissue to settle. Then it can be realistically assessed whether tightening is needed, and which kind.
Can I combine lipoedema surgery and skin tightening?
In some cases, yes – for example, RENUVION® (skin tightening without surgery) can be combined directly with liposuction. Larger tightening procedures such as a thigh lift or upper arm lift are usually carried out as separate procedures once healing is complete.
Are skin-tightening operations covered by German statutory health insurance?
As a rule, skin-tightening operations are not covered by German statutory health insurance and are charged as self-pay treatment. In exceptional cases – for example, very pronounced skin laxity with medical problems (eczema, fungal infections) – an application for the costs to be covered can be made to the insurer.
Which skin tightening is most common after lipoedema surgery?
Thigh lifts and upper arm lifts are the most common, as these areas are particularly affected by lipoedema. Many patients who have also lost weight opt for a tummy tuck as well.
How much time off do I need after skin tightening?
That depends on the extent of the procedure: upper arm and thigh lifts require about 2–3 weeks of rest. For a tummy tuck you should allow 3–4 weeks. A body lift, as the most extensive option, needs 4–6 weeks of recovery.
What is RENUVION® and who is it suitable for?
RENUVION® is an innovative technology for tightening the skin from within. Helium plasma is introduced under the skin and tightens the tissue without large incisions. It is suitable for mild to moderate skin laxity and can often be combined directly with liposuction – ideal for patients who do not want conventional skin-tightening surgery.
